Moving From Pakistan to London Changed Who I Am

Being Pakistan in London

Moving to a new country changes more than your surroundings. Sometimes it quietly changes you.

On this episode of The Culture Date, I sat down with Basit, a Pakistani writer, digital creator, and NHS professional now living in London.

We talk about what it means to build a life far from home while still carrying the traditions, values, and identity that shaped you.

Basit reflects on growing up in Pakistan, where community is deeply woven into daily life. Neighbours know each other, celebrations are shared, and connection comes naturally.

Moving to London brought a different rhythm. A faster city. More personal space. A culture where people often keep to themselves.

“At first I felt alone,” he shared. “Back home people talk to each other. Here everyone stays in their own space.”

Over time, he realized something interesting. Living in London had slowly changed him too.

But leaving home also opened new perspectives. Meeting people from different cultures helped him understand the world in ways he never had before.

He also speaks about something many immigrants feel but rarely say out loud: the sense that you represent your country wherever you go.

For Basit, that means showing the world a side of Pakistan that is often overlooked.

“My culture is my foundation,” he says.

Key Moments From Our Conversation

  • Moving from community to independence.
Basit reflects on the contrast between Pakistan’s deeply social culture and London’s more individual lifestyle, and how adapting to that shift changed him.

  • Becoming an ambassador for your country.
He shares how living abroad made him feel responsible for showing people the positive reality of Pakistan beyond media stereotypes.

  • Identity grows when cultures meet.
Living in London exposed him to people from across the world, expanding his understanding of culture while strengthening his own roots.

  • The immigrant definition of home.
For many immigrants, home is not one place. It becomes a feeling shared between where you came from and where you are building your life.
